I have a mystery for you! I can get the code below to work on my Samsung Galaxy test phone, which is running 2.2 (Froyo). It doesn't work on my HTC Thunderbolt test phone, which is running 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). This is about as simple as it gets when it comes to gathering location info, but I have also implemented the best practices explained here with the same results: Froyo is go, Gingerbread is dead.

What are some things I should try in order to solve this problem? Is it my code? Is it hardware, software? Permissions? Have I angered the computer science gods? I will accept the first answer given with a suggestion that leads to a solution. Thanks for the help!

Done. I think [updateProvidersLocked] raises the most alarms, but Google gave me nothing on first try. –  SilithCrowe Mar 1 '12 at 16:53
    
By the way friends, I forgot to mention: If I go into Google Maps, it gets my position in moments flat. Other apps seem to have no problems getting a location either. –  SilithCrowe Mar 1 '12 at 16:57

Sorry Siddharth, I never did solve this issue. I needed this functionality for a map, so I ended up using the MyLocationOverlay object from the android maps libraries object instead. No word yet on why the Thunderbolt doesn't like the LocationManager stuff. –  SilithCrowe Feb 28 '13 at 16:11

Try reusing this code in onCreate() function,

Tried both moving and copying this into onCreate, but no luck. onResume() is definitely getting called because the log statement appears as expected: "Starting location services." –  SilithCrowe Mar 1 '12 at 17:14

Are your testing this while walking around or while sitting at your dev machine with USB attached for logcat output? I suspect that 2.3.4 is being more strict about the second and third params to:

requestLocationUpdates(providers.get(i), 1, 1, mLocationListener)

Those params throttle the rate at which the hardware generates updates. What youre currently using says only give me updates if the location changes by more than a meter AND no more often than every second.

From the Location Manager docs

If minDistance is greater than 0, a location will only be broadcasted if the device moves by minDistance meters. To obtain notifications as frequently as possible, set both parameters to 0.

Try this to see if it makes a difference. If not, please post your logcat output for more ideas.

Oh, I think I left those set to 1 by accident. I changed to values to zero but it didn't fix the problem. I posted some logs for you as well - wish I could post all the output, but I reached my character limit pretty quick. –  SilithCrowe Mar 1 '12 at 16:58

I was having the same issue on my Android tablet, until I realized that I hadn't enabled Google location services. As soon as I did that, onLocationChanged started giving me updates based on the WiFi network I was connected to. See this help document for how to enable it (Settings -> Location on most Android devices).
