i'm working on this problem for quite a time, and can't get it to work. Hope some of you could spare the time to help me.

The scenario
There is a web application which uses spring mvc. This web app ist supposed to use another maven project, where a persistence layer is contained. The persistence layer currently only consists of a service and a spring-data repository. The persistence layer itself handles the work with a local mysql instances.

My Problem
So far for the understanding of the scenario. I have a J-Unit test inside the maven project that contains the persistence layer. The Test loads and save an object of an entityclass. This is handled over the Service. Both operations work fine.

Now i'm trying the same thing inside the web app. Again i'm trying to save and load an entity object. Again in a J-Unit Test. But this time it fails. Spring states that the Repository reference inside the Service couldn't be autowired, cause there is no bean that would fit for that.

I tryed multiple things to get this solved, like using a direct wiring, giving qualifiers and so one. No of my actions worked. I even build two complete new maven projects where i simplified the scenario a bit, but left the nessarcy things the same. There it worked like a charm. I don't get it what i'm doing wrong on this one since i adapted the settings from the working example.

There is no implementation of QuestionRepository. Through the magic of spring-data, it creates itself a bean of the needed repository. It should be sufficient to annotated the Interface with @Repository and let it's package be scanned with the <jpa:repositories base-package="com.company.dev.webapp.repository" /> Setting in the persistence-context.xml –  Makenshi Mar 1 '12 at 8:50
    
Ok didn't know that :) And why QuestionService inherits from the QuestionRepository interface. Since it is implemented by the QuestionServiceImpl, you may encounter a kind of circular dependency . –  nico_ekito Mar 1 '12 at 8:57
    
Spring Data is pretty neat...if it works i mean. :) I'm letting the QuestionService inherent from QuestionRepository, so that i don't have to declare the methodes two times seperately. If i unterstood the Spring Data Documentation, the Annotation @NoRepositoryBean prevents the QuestionService from being instantiate as a repository-bean by spring-data. –  Makenshi Mar 1 '12 at 8:58

I found the solution. After writing an custom implementation of the QuestionRepository and wiring it directly through xml, a new Exception showed up which solves the mystery. The bean declaration

was meant to provide a bean of a simple self written Repository which only persists the objects in a collection in memory.

Since it's id is questionRepository Spring tries to autowire by name it on the questionRepository field in the class QuestionServiceImpl.

Long story, short fact: Double check the names which someone else may have defined on your configuration files. :)
