I had an interesting question. I am passing an error string from Linux kernel to userspace. I have a library in user space with api's. The applications link to this library. When applicaiton call the api, an ioctl is invoked and I pass a stack variable into the kernel. In side the kernel if there is any error, I do a copy_to_user to that stack variable. Once the ioctl returns, I check the string. If it is not empty, I do a strncpy of the string to a thread local variable. So application can print the error.

Please dont question the design, But is see that my box keeps hanging when i run the code. If I comment out the strncpy, then it seems to load fine. I did a test and noticed that if i remove the strncpy and just print the log on the console, i do see lots of messages.

So can someone please let me know why the console keeps hanging.

As i mentioned i printed the log on console instead of using strncpy. It prints fine. Meaning transfer of string from kernel to userspace is no problem.

API1 is one function in the library. There are many functions. These are called by the applications which link to the library.

Can you post the code reproducing the issue? However, it sounds problematic that you are doing a strncpy to TLS because of how limited the space is likely to be. Why not just store a pointer there instead? –  Mike Kwan Mar 7 '12 at 18:37
    
Perhaps you're trashing some memory ? Off by one ? String is not nul terminated ? etc. You need to post some code. –  nos Mar 7 '12 at 18:43

Please post real code - strncpy(var.string,tt.string,100); should not compile since there isn't a string member in those structs. Small details will probably matter for a problem like this, so please post code that's copy-pasted from an actual hanging program. Also, what's API1()? –  Michael Burr Mar 7 '12 at 18:54
