Like the title says im new to android. I have already learned quite a bit. I would just like to know if theres anything in my code I could make better? It seems to be too much for such a simple app. What can I consolidate? Also what would you recommend for me to do to catch when a user presses submit before entering a number.

This question is a bit too general. But for starters you might want to use an AsyncTask for background threads that publish data to the UI thread. They are much easier to use.

For the part when the user doesn't write in a number show him a dialog or toast notification and don't start the background thread.
