I'm trying to setup a context menu using WinAPI in my application, but for some reason I'm not successful. The code that would pop up the menu is placed in the WM_RBUTTONUP case. However, nothing happens after right-click. Could someone tell me what am I doing wrong?

As a FYI - you should handle WM_CONTEXTMENU rather than WM_RBUTTONUP: that will get fired on both right-click and also on the context menu key, ensuring that your app is keyboard accessible. –  BrendanMcK Mar 9 '12 at 10:56

Your hMenu is a static variable, which is loaded before hInst has a value. I believe the LoadMenu call is failing.

You'll also note in the TrackPopupMenu documentation that not just any menu handle can be used, it has to be a popup menu handle. In the resources, create a single element for the top-level menu and put your popup menu underneath it; then use LoadMenu to load the top-level, and GetSubMenu to get the handle to your drop-down.

In global variables, at the begining , I left just HMENU hMenu;. In the Init Instance I put LoadMenu(hInst, AKEINTRESOURCE(IDR_CONTEXT_MENU)); after hInst = hInstance;. However, still no effect. –  pmichna Mar 8 '12 at 23:42

Before your call to TrackPopupMenu, call GetCusrorPos instead of ClientToScreen. Since GetCursorPos will return the position of the cursor for your popup. ClientToScreen just converts some coords, the popup is probably showing somewhere off screen. –  Gunner Mar 9 '12 at 0:01
    
I modified the code that there is GetCursorPos(&point); TrackPopupMenu(hMenu, TPM_RIGHTBUTTON, point.x, point.y, 0, hWnd, NULL); , but it hasn't helped. –  pmichna Mar 9 '12 at 6:13
