I have a data frame that I would like to subset based on the unique values of the schoolid variable. These would then be scored into a list, so each member of the list is a subset of the data frame. I obviously know how to do this for specific values of schoolid, one at a time, but how can I do this systematically without knowing which values might occur in schoolid?

I don't fully understand your question but split or lapply with subset may be useful. I think you may have to provide a bit more clarity with what you expect to split by. Do you want a range? A certain value. I think match or gregexpr may be part of the solution. –  Tyler Rinker Mar 12 '12 at 17:07

Just use split:

schoolid_groups <- split(Data, Data$schoolid)

take a look at dlply from the plyr package (d=df input, l=list output, ply= apply)

library(plyr)
