First off, this is homework, but I am not looking for the answer by any means. I am in a database class and we were given a data base with stats on the american baseball league (teams, stats on each person etc) the schema definition for each table is below the question. The querie i need to write is this:

What pair of batters on the same team had the most homers as a pair? Your query should provide the rst and last names of each batter in the pair along with the number of home runs that each hit.

So basically, just take the two highest home runs per team and see which team has the highest amount, but i'm having trouble writing a querie that will generate the highest scoring person ( in terms of homeruns) per team. What I have so far is something like this.

select nameFirst, nameLast, name, HR
from Players, Teams, Batting
where HR >= ALL(select HR from Batting) and Players.playerID = Batting.playerID;

which displays the correct team name (and i know this because it displays 30 tuples, and that's the amount of teams in the DB) , but the amount of home runs and the player's first and last name is all the same. (In this database, it is Prince Fielders for the Brewers because he has the most home runs in the database.) A tip on how to achieve is so it displays the correct person's first and last name is greatly appreciated!

I'm not an SQL expert by any means, but I am under the impression that if you want to do a mathy-expression, you can use HAVING clause. It works even better if you combine HAVING with MAX( somefield ) – Kristian Mar 14 '12 at 2:18
Hmm, I tried messing around with a Having statement, but I couldn't get it so It would give me anything else than just the person with the highest amount of home runs in the DB. – joebro Mar 14 '12 at 2:49

I'm assuming HR is in the Batter table even though it doesn't appear to be in the table definition. But what you need to do is join the batter table to itself. You can query from the same table more than once in the same query, just give each table instance a different alias.

By joining the Batter table to itself you are creating what is called a "cartesian product" which is basically a combination of every two batters in that table. From there, you can compute the sum of HR and then order by that value accordingly.

I will provide you the query if you like but I know you said this was homework so if you want to try and figure it out based on my explanation you can post any questions you have and I can help from there :)

Yeah, sorry about that. It didn't copy over correctly, it is now updated. So this is what i started working on Select distinct Batting1.HR, nameFIRST, nameLAST, name from Batting1, Batting1 b1, Players1, Teams1 where Batting1.playerID = Players1.playerID and HR > ???? ; I am confused as to how to determine that the two batters have the highest. This will get you on the right track, hopefully.

I just realized that my schemas weren't copied over correctly to the question, so i updated it. But for some reason it throws an error on this line 'p1.HR + p2.HR as [Sum]'. I don't know if derby allows that or not. But for the schemas, HR is stored in batting, so would i change your code from player p1 join player p2 to from batting b1 join batting b2? – joebro Mar 14 '12 at 5:12
