if I have a text file like this :

this is line one
This is line two
this is line three

How would I use getline to read each into a stringstream, then print the stream into a new string while preserving the newline character? I am on a mac using Xcode 4. Here is my code: I am having trouble because the text it prints out only prints on one line.

The Problem lies within the function shiftCharacters. I am not sure how to get it to preserve the new line character please help?? The code is compilable.

In the future you might want to think about making a Short, Self Contained, Correct (Compilable), Example instead of putting a large block of code in the question. Besides making it easier for us to read and understand, it might also help you find the problem yourself. –  Joachim Pileborg Mar 22 '12 at 6:56

the_string += '\n';

Wouldn't getline (the_stream, the_string, CHAR_EOF); work better (where CHAR_EOF is the end of file character) if you know what the expected EOF is? –  chris Mar 22 '12 at 4:43

Adding the '\n' in this way will possibly not reflect the real input for the very last line. –  user1182474 Jun 8 '14 at 21:45
