I have to create a class to extract data from an xml named invoice.xml which I created. In the xml, a customer may buy more than one item. The problem upon printing the extracted data is that if that is the case, only the last element purchased by a customer will be printed. Could anyone suggest a solution? I will also attach my xml file because I'm pretty sure that's where the problem lies.

I recommend you to use a framework, like Apache Digester, to read XML files instead homemade code. –  jddsantaella Mar 22 '12 at 15:37

No need to use a library here. He already has working code. It would be a waste of time. Plus instead of using a 3rd party library he can just use JAXB instead of a hand built SAX parser. No need to introduce a 3rd party dependency if you don't need to. (JAXB was added to the JDK at about Update 14 of Java 1.6) –  Michael Mar 22 '12 at 15:48
    
Does your DTD allow multiple items? Personally I find XmlSchemas much easier to read. Can you provide your DTD? –  Michael Mar 22 '12 at 15:50

the DTD says that one <items> element can only have, one <order> element and one <item> element. In the XML file you have <items> with two <item> elements which is wrong with respect the DTD.

If <tems> may have several <item> elements, one solution is to change the following line of the DTD

<!ELEMENT items (order, item)>

to

<!ELEMENT items (order, item+)>

also the following line in the XML file is wrong:

<!DOCTYPE people SYSTEM "invoice.dtd">

it should be

<!DOCTYPE invoices SYSTEM "invoice.dtd">

there is no people element definition in the DTD

Since I totally misunderstood your problem and led you astray all day I have fixed your parser so it handles Items as separate objects and now your Invoice contains a List of Items. I apologize!

Are there any exceptions thrown? It is finding the invoice.xml file right? Try running the code through your debugger. –  Michael Mar 22 '12 at 16:17
    
There aren't any exceptions, this is getting really weird now. I have also attached my Invoice class in case something in the formatting is wrong and it just doesn't print the items. –  Alex Encore Mar 22 '12 at 16:25
