I have never programmed in visual basic before and my boss just told me to edit this visual basic program. This program read from read from a list of file and put the data in them(some numbers) into my boss sql database. He want me to edit this program so if the numbers in these files are out of range, the program will ignore these files. I'm trying to understand how the program does this:

Here is what I understand so far: in

For i = 1 To UBound(cFileList)

it goes through all the files. In

For j = 1 To nDetectorCount(.DetID)

it goes into each file and store the data in variables such as totalvolume1, totalspeed1... In

it does some filter. Finally, in

it put all the variables in two strings, Sqlcommand1 and Sqlcommand2, so they can be put into sql database.

Is my understanding of this program correct so far? Does this program then use

Print #nFileDir, Sqlcommand1

Print #nFileDir, Sqlcommand2

to put those two strings into the database?

I think you'll get more help by posting what you have done so far. Is this Visual Basic from Visual Studio or VBA as in embedded Access or Excel? Did you run this program? If Visual Basic, did it compile? –  octopusgrabbus Mar 23 '12 at 22:58
    
is Visual Basic program, it has 1 .vbp and 2 .bas files so i have to use Microsoft Visual Basic 6 to open it. As soon as i press run, it stops. –  help Mar 23 '12 at 23:07

No. The Print #nFileDir statements are writing the data out to what appears to be a .csv (comma separated value) file. (Note this is really bad code, even for old VB6 written by a wanna-be programmer.)

The pertinent statement for the two Print statements you're asking about is this one:

Open "c:\" & FileSQLDirection & "" For Output As #nFileDir

This creates a file number (#nFileDir. which is declared as an Integer) to a text file (open for writing), which is used in the rest of the code to write to using the Print #nFileDir statements. The resulting text file is then imported to the database using the cnnNew.Execute statements that reference FileSQLDirection. (Note FileSQLDirection in the Open call I show above.) NOTE: The "file number" I mention is not a Win32 file handle, and isn't compatible with Win32 API calls or other uses that need one. See Bob Riemersma's comments below.

To make the change your boss is asking about, you'll need to fix the statements before these two Print statements, so that they only execute if the data is within the boundaries your boss wants for the data. You need to check the values before you get to the assignment of the text to SqlCommand1 and SQLCommand2 and the Print statements that writes them out to the text file, so the invalid values never get to the text file.

No, it's going to take a lot more than that, because of where totalVolume1 is assigned (and because there's other work involved after that that also needs to be avoided, if I'm reading the code right). I'm afraid it's not something you can fix by code you can fit in a comment here. :) Unfortunately (for you - I consider it a good thing for me), I'm not a VB6 programmer, so I can't tell you the exact fix. SO isn't really designed for that, anyway - this isn't a "please do my work for me" site. About all I can do is point you in the right direction. my logic is for example i have ten files and each file contain an integer for totalvolume. First, For i = 1 To UBound(cFileList) will go through each file. Next, For j = 1 To nDetectorCount(.DetID) will go into the file and take the totalvolume integer and put into my totalvolume variable. Next i put that varible into sqlcommand string. Next i check if totalvolume is within range or not, if it is, i put the sqlcommand string into #nFileDir. Finally, the file #nFileDir refer to will be imported to the database. So if data of a file is out of range, it wont be put into #nFileDir and database –  help Mar 24 '12 at 2:30

It is not a file handle in the sense of a Win32 file handle. These values are actually indexes into a file descriptor table the VB runtime maintains. The reason I hate to see them called file handles is people often get off into the weeds trying to use them with API calls. –  Bob77 Mar 25 '12 at 2:22
