I need to develop an API where a client will make Http Requests. For security reasons, I am thinking I should require the client to encrypt the data using a known algorithm, such as 3DES or AES. Problem is, I am not so sure what is the best way to do this. Interoperability is the key, meaning all sorts of clients would need to connect to this API. Should I use 3DES or AES? Do I simply provide the client with a Key and IV? Do I instead provide the client with the Salt and Password. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't want the end user on the client side to be able to look in his browser history, and see the query strings used in the API calls. I thought it would be best to encrypt the entire payload. –  Steve Kiss Mar 27 '12 at 8:50

The end user will be a mobile user passing through an Telco APN. Certain Header variables are added by the telco when the user is browsing on Port 80. As such, he will need to open the page in question in his browser. However, I do not want him to be able to see any of the query string values, or to be able to tamper with them. –  Steve Kiss Mar 27 '12 at 8:57

Think you need to add more info. You've got a vague notion that something needs protecting and encryption is the solution, but its not clear what needs protecting, and from who. If you plan to use symmetric encryption, and the end user is the enemy for example, then you would still have issues with distributing the encryption keys without the end user discovering them. –  PaulG Mar 27 '12 at 9:51
