I have a fairly complex (well, for me it is) program that is supposed to simulate 5 lines in a grocery store. A person goes up to the line and finds one that is empty and then proceeds to checkout. If all of the lines are full, the person joins the line with the shortest wait time. This program has been adapted from another one that was in my book (thus all of the comments). I was able to get this to work with just 2 lines but with 5 I am unable to get it to work correctly.

The output is always zero and when I throw in some System.out.println("test"); statements, they don't print out where they should, meaning that the if statements aren't running properly. –  CoolerScouter Mar 28 '12 at 21:02
    
I'm guessing you mean the part where it check's queue size? Have you confirmed that a customer is arriving at all? –  dann.dev Mar 28 '12 at 21:05

Looks like a typical copy-paste error here:

if ((!number5.isBusy( ))  &&  (!arrivalTimes**2**.isEmpty( )))

...

As Ozan said, use some Lists, or Arrays if you have multiple items, it reduces the chance of you making a mistake like this.

Edit: Additional advice, I think you should be using >= instead of > when comparing the arrival times, as now you may end up getting a non-optimal value if you have more than 1 maximal value, i.e. if you have 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, you will end up putting the customer to line 5, even though you probably want to put it into lines 1 or 2.

Any Number of items bigger than 1 should be handled in lists:

List<Queue<Integer>> queues = new ArrayList<Queue<Integer>>();
for (int i=1; i<=5; i++)
  queues.add(new LinkedList<Integer>>());

Start designing your code closer to the specification:

Queue<Integer> emptyqueue = GetEmptyQueue(queues);
if (emptyqueue != null)
   ...
else
   ...
