THE PROBLEM

Simple sql that returns about 500 rows takes:

  1. 40 ms in Toad (this return the first 500 rows)
  2. 500-600 ms in Java with connection obtained from an instance of oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSource class.
  3. 2100-2500 ms in Java with connection obtained from the data source configured in Weblogic on looked up via JNDI

The above timings exclude getting the connection instance.

Problem: slow performance of option 3. Why? How can it be made more reasonable?

i've seen really bad performance with standard connection pool on 11g, much improved with dedicated connection pool. –  Randy Mar 28 '12 at 22:11
    
@Alex - Can you separate the timings into the time required to open the connection and the time required to run the query? Are the database sessions already open and available in a connection pool? Or are you creating new physical database connections? If you are creating new physical database connections, why are you including connection time in your benchmarking-- presumably in reality you're allocating the connections in the pool at startup and are only rarely opening and closing them in the future. –  Justin Cave Mar 28 '12 at 22:12
