Hi I have managed to get my buttons colouring in. now i want to write a piece of code that will only allow one button of each colour in any row or column. I have attempted this but can not get my private boolean to work. below is the code I am only trying to check rows at the moment

Next time you encounter an exception, add the stacktrace to your question as well –  Robin Mar 29 '12 at 17:55

You've got j and i backwards on one setup line in your constructor, so it's referring to a button instance that hasn't been created yet:

buttons[i][j].setActionCommand(j + " " + i);
        ^  ^

When I swapped those around and tested it, the program runs just fine.

thanks that got rid of the exception. i honestly don't thik i would of noticed that but i can still have 2 of the same colours in a row or column any ideas. –  user1296913 Mar 29 '12 at 22:08
