I need to test a database user to see if that user has privileges to alter tables in the database. I need two users: one that can change the database table structure and one that has the roles db_reader and db_writer. I found this query on the web showing all permissions for the current user:

SELECT * FROM fn_my_permissions (NULL, 'DATABASE')

Here are the results for a readonly user with roles db_datareader and db_datawriter:

What query would I use to determine that the user is readonly and thus cannot continue forward?

Something's not right here. A Read-Only user should not have INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE permissions. – Robert Harvey Mar 29 '12 at 17:30

@Robert Harvey/Lynn Crumbling: I'll change that name in the question. I called it 'readonly' but in reality that user needs to be able to CRUD data in the database but not alter the schema. – brian buck Mar 29 '12 at 17:39

By definition, being a member of db_datawriter and db_datareader is going to mean your user is able to perform CRUD operations. Are you really asking how you can tell if your user is a member of those roles?

You can query for whether users are a member of a role or not:

sp_helprolemember 'db_datawriter'

If you really are interested in a granular permission-level query, why? It's always going to be true, if the user is a member of db_datawriter and db_datareader.

Yes: EXEC sp_helpuser 'your_username'. This will list all database roles that the user is a member of. Note, that if you run this for 'dbo' (aka 'sa'), you won't see db_datareader and db_datawriter listed; you'll see db_owner, which has many more permissions. – Lynn Crumbling Mar 29 '12 at 18:08

I think the command you're actually looking for is HAS_PERMS_BY_NAME which "Evaluates the effective permission of the current user on a securable." fn_my_permissions "Returns a list of the permissions effectively granted to the principal on a securable."
