I fixed something similar in 2 steps

first

First override the editcellAt editCellAt from your JTable and call requestFoxus requestFocus after preparing the editor:

    }

  if ( row < 0 || row >= getRowCount() ||
      column < 0 || column >= getColumnCount() )
    {

  TableCellEditor editor=getCellEditor(row, column);
  if ( editor != null && editor.isCellEditable(e) )
    {
    editorComp=prepareEditor(editor, row, column);
    if ( editorComp == null )

      removeEditor();
      return false;
      }
    //aangepast
    Rectangle rect=getCellRect(row, column, false);
    if ( datamodel_.useAdaptedEditorRect() )

Then overload the requestFocu requestFocus from your JPanel and make sure your textfield is put as editorComponent:

You can always grab the keyEvent and set it yourself:
