In the original question the functions return 0 on success or a non-zero value that could identify a variety of error conditions. But for your suggestion the functions would have to return true on success or false for all possible errors. Any descriptive error code would be lost.

It seems in both of your scenarios the concentrator is opening a socket to the server. Will the server be able to handle the situation where all 10K (or just many) concentrators try to connect simultaneously? If the server address changes will you have to go out in the field and update 10K concentrators? My first thought would be that the server should be opening the connection to each of the concentrators.

Typically when an interrupt occurs then a return address gets pushed onto the stack. If you can examine the stack to find the return address then you can find the code that was executing when the address exception occurred.

The diagram in your example seems like a bad example because it is not a state machine diagram (where are the states?). It seems more like an activity diagram but I'm not even sure this is valid UML.

You say that, "it goes directly to the "else" statement, although the data is 0x10". How do you know that the data is 0x10? Have you stepped through this in a debugger? Are you sure that uart_getc() even returned a character? You should check the status in the high byte of rec_char after calling uart_getc().

The hex value 63, 75, 72, 72 are the ASCII codes for the letters 'curr'. You probably shouldn't put 'curr' in quotes when calling binblockwrite.

Try changing the format specifier from 0x$016lx to 0x$016llx (two letter 'l'). Go read about printf format specifiers to understand that string and why two 'l' might help. I'll update the code in my original answer.
