Oh, and yes, the engine will constantly consume every CPU cycle on every CPU core/thread until none remain. I'm also not worried about being preempted by other applications, because the kind of applications the engine is intended for are inherently intended to be the only application running (besides the most fundamental services that any OS must perform). What do I mean by optional work that can be done this frame or sometime later? Compute and update the list of objects near and massive enough to generate sufficient gravitational force on any one object to be worth computing every frame.

I'm not concerned with "different CPUs" and those kinds of issues. Those issues will be automatically dealt with by automatically disabling features until the average frame rate slightly exceeds 30FPS. Once the set of "supportable features" is found in this manner, from then on the issue is knowing when a certain frame has more or less demand than average (like more or less collisions to deal with on a given frame), and then knowing that, either do more or less "optional" work that can be put off until later frames if necessary without harming the quality of the resulting simulation or game.

More and more it seems like the authors of GPU drivers try to hide everything and make everything appear asynchronous to applications. For example, glXSwapBuffers() not blocking (though apparently at least glFinish() does still block). From small clues, I'm beginning to think I may have no choice but to trust the GPU driver writers to an extent, and just focus on finishing each frame in whatever is the measured average frame time (take the elapsed time from the 64-bit CPU clock timer for 256 frames, then divide by 256). Then thereafter make decisions based upon that CPU clock timer.

Yes, I can see how one can take advantage of triple or quadruple buffering to get better average performance and avoid "once-in-awhile" misses of vsync. I rejected that approach when I started this project because it increases the lag between human input and visual response to that input. However, as the importance of making simulations and games work over the internet, I might have to reconsider this issue, though I'm not sure what my ultimate decision will be. The point being, even with super-high-speed internet bandwidth, the latency just can't be reliably reduced very far... yet.

But in that approach, don't my other threads need to know when they can call various GLX/OpenGL functions without blocking? Seems like my code ends up not being very efficient either way.

@Blagoh: Yes, js-ctypes works fine on linux (in my firefox extension code). I'm not sure what "pull of" means, but if you want to see some code, send email to my username at ymail dot com and we can communicate. Are you good at javascript?

Thanks for your 3 new messages. I already wrote implementations for some of my routines, then got sidetracked (before I got to the f0128, f0256, f0512, f1024, f2048, f4096 floating-point versions). But I did finish the integer multiplies and divides. The multiply loops are table driven; each step is 64-bit * 64-bit ===>> 128-bit result (then add that in). The divide is done in 64-bit chunks too, similar to the old fashion school method. If you want to compare the speed of these routines to yours, I can send my code (all 64-bit att/gas/linux assembly).

Let me see if I understand this. If someone closes the firefox browser and my extension has one or more windows open, that would prevent the firefox browser (and my windows) from being terminated? How about the following approach. When my extension executing in the firefox browser receives an event something like document_unload or something, it checks window.closed (on its own window == firefox browser), and if the return value is true == closed, it closes all the window it created. Does that work? If not, is there a way for my extension (any window event) to detect close?

Okay, thanks. Looks like I have to stick to my current approach, and create the windows with window.openDialog(). Before I post any code, I'll probably try passing the [address of] my term_destroy() or term_highlight_destroy() function, then call it just before the clarify window closes itself (when the mouse cursor exists the clarify window). Trying this will tell me at least part of how the execution context stuff works.

Okay, I see the "panel" can display HTML. However, is my extension running in the panel as well as the main firefox browser window? If not, the panel won't work for me. As for posting my code, I'm in the middle of screwing around with it so it doesn't work right now. But in a couple days maybe I'll do that and try to attract your attention again.

I don't know what a panel is, but I'm guessing a panel cannot appear exactly where I want it (directly above the term the mouse cursor paused over), and perhaps it doesn't contain HTML or execute my extension (while my extension needs it to contain HTML and needs it to execute my extension so my extension services are provided in ALL the windows my extension creates (the "clarify window", the "elaborate window" and the "option window"). Or maybe I am not understanding your message, which would not be surprising because I am indeed a notice at firefox-extensions and javascript.

Well, part of my reply is: I'm a firefox-extension novice AND a javascript novice. But the content of your post makes me believe your impression of my problem is different than the problem I actually have. I need to get pointer events over ALL of my windows, because I want the services my extension provides to work in ALL of those windows. The problem is when the mouse cursor exists the "clarify window" into the desktop area... at which point my extension gets NO more events, and thus cannot be stimulated to remove the highlight from the term in the browser window.
