Thanks for the answer. Your technique works but requires the rectangle area to be larger than the width of the word you put in there. In my case the rectangles are really small (as can be seen in the original post image), here what your method gives : very small rectangle

Yes I need the array to be dynamic, the code above is jsut a small example, in my real code there are many big arrays who therefore need to be dynamically allocated. Could you be more specific about your proposition with memcpy ?

Oh I think I get it : the memory block allocated dynamically is not contiguous with the previous members of my structure, however MPI uses the displacement array that I give him and tries to access the 10 MPI_DOUBLE after the member 'b', which results in a segmentation fault. How is it possible then to reduce such structure with a dynamic array ?

I have not yet found how it is possible to find neighbours during the building phase. Could you please be more specific ? One other way I see is to store the tree as a contiguous array on each node, and then perform a reduction so that all processes get the full tree locally, and then do what I said for finding neighbors.

Ok I think I see what you mean. But look at my picture, when the first partition is done, it splits the processes [0-4] and the processes [5-10]. At that time processes [0-4] know that their right neighbor are [5-10] and vice versa. however, later on, processes [0-4] split into [0-1] and [2-4] while processes [5-10] split into [5-7] and [8-10]. At this phase, I don't see how the processes [0-1] can know that the processes [8-10] aren't their right neighbors anymore. Do I miss something ? Did you implicitly assumed communications during the building phase?

While building the tree, by keeping in memory the location of the cuts, I know what are the boundaries of the current sub-rectangle. So once the tree is built, each process already have the position of its boundary. I'm ok with finding the neighbors while building the tree in parallel and not afterwards... I just don't see how, for instance, the process 2 is going to know that processes 8 and 5 are its neighbors ?
