OK well I changed that. My serial read function still returns with no data. That is wait comm event returns false continuously. I am calling it from main in a while loop for testing. The arduino is putting out a constant 1 byte value every loop. I checked this with TerraTerm.

I figured out the *realRegister before comming back to read the answers here. Not sure why a * must be used to write to the object referenced by the pointer in that bit but not in the baseaddress/offset version. I should have also added a tag for microcontroller or DSP to the original post.

Actually a DSP registers. I want to write to them to configure the different periperals on the chip. Examples of code are hard to come by.

Well found main issue was that I did not reset the bitPos variable to the beginning of the bitset. However trying "~(1 bitshift q), oxff and (0 bitshift q), and taking out the else statement all apear to give different results????
