still have no idea where this /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7 is coming from, and why cannot I overwrite it by PYTHONPATH?! I've heard of virtualenv, but this time I have full(sudo) access to the machine and I just want to be able to fix such simple, at a first glance, things

Absolutely, and I'm glad that I realized it with your help and an actual sm_20 device! I'm done with atomics now, instead I'll implement iterative reduction with intermediate/scratch array now. If by any chance you happen to know any good links for tutorials/examples of a general case reduction (reduction in more than one block), please let me know. Thanks again.

Thank you very much, it is crystal clear now indeed! But what is striking about this, is that this broken code worked just fine (giving correct results) for sm>=30 (K20 and GeForce gtx660), while here someone broke sm_35 machine by doing same exercise with 32 threads/warp against 32 mutexes. I'm guessing sm30+ instruction per lockstep was saving me from deadlock in my case of 2 conflicting threads/warp (my typical gridDim.x was about 10).

My concern is simply because later on I would need to use the min_values only in some other downstream kernel, so it would be +1 kernel +1 cudaMalloc to unpack float32/int32 union (or bandwidth wasting loading float32/int32 union, unpacking, and using float32 only)... But it is a great idea anyways! Given the conditions, I think, it is the best (fast/reliable) possible technical solution here - it's just the matter of how well it interfaces with upstream and downstream kernels/functions/output/whatever.

But this way I'd need to make min_value and its min_index stored "altogether" as 64-bit word into one "64-bit cell" - in other words I'd need to make them consecutive, making my output array - array of structures, rather than having two separate arrays (vectors) for min_values and min_indexes, is that correct?
