Thank you for the fast response. So i get the 00000001 for 255 part, but then how would you represent ,say, 1.25 bits per pixel? And when does the bit allocation take place? is it during the quantization or during the coding(huffman/entropy)??

comment How to save a c++ readable .mat file
so i tried saving like this; save('Compressed.txt','I_runcode','-ascii'); save('variables.mat','I_dim','N','M','n','m','Norm_Mat','I'); and this is the error message i got. ffdct1('Lenna.bmp',8,8) 警告: Attempt to write an unsupported data type to an ASCII file. Variable 'I_runcode' not written to file. Looks like i can't save the "I_runcode" structure to txt in -ascii.

i am using "save" to write these files but i realised that am carrying some coefficients in the same compressed file. the c code is supposed to read in a 256*256 array of data but my DCT file actually has a 32*32 data array. below is the example of how i am saving my DCT data in matlab, where "I_runcode" is the compressed data. could you please explain to me how i can save this data(I_runcode) to make it readable in c++.(Just in case,the code is here. ge.tt/18gZOxW/v/0 % Saving the Compressed Code to Disk. save ('Compressed.txt','I_runcode','I_dim','N','M','n','m','Norm_Mat','I');

i quoted the error in the description. I also "commented" on the line with the error. Well matlab says >> idct1 Error using bin2dec (line 27) Input must be a string. Error in idct1 (line 98) countval=bin2dec(count_str);

yeah bytes is the size of the image so how would you calculate the compression ratio using the bit allocation?
