Sorry, you are missing on the so-called "birthday paradox". Have a better look at the "nice table", it does not work the way you think. For the figures I give, in that table, it would be a value "10^9" in a column labelled "4.3*10^-60" and row "128 bits" (but the table does not go below 10^-18).

comment Jump into the middle of instruction - in IA-32
Well, I wrote "more than 12" and I believe that 15 is, indeed, "more than 12". Since each new architecture version introduces new opcodes, the maximum length of an instruction is not really bounded. Even if today's x86 go up to 15 bytes, ulterior version may go beyond.

comment Garbage collection behaviour for String.intern()
If two threads call String.intern() on two strings which happen to have the same contents, then they must both obtain the same reference. This necessarily implies some sort of communication between the two cores. In practice, String.intern() is implemented with a sort-of hashtable protected by a mutex, and each access (read or write) locks the mutex. There can be contention on that mutex, but most of the slowdown will be due to the necessity for the cores to synchronize their L1 caches (such synchronization is implied by the mutex locking, and is the expensive part).
