This works for most simple cases, but is it possible to use replicate instead of lapply or sapply without creating n new columns? For example, bar[, replicate(n=3, foo(.SD$x)), .(y)] adds a new pair of columns for each replicate and the as.list(unlist(...)) trick doesn't seem to retain the column names.

Thanks - this does the job well. Still interested in any improved/faster solutions using dplyr and tidyr. I find their syntax more straightforward and understandable, though data.table seems quite a bit faster in this case.

This solution works better, at least in the case of dotplot with horizontal=FALSE, since dotplot(1:10~1:10, horizontal=FALSE, scales=list(x=list(at=NULL))) does not suppress the x-axis, but dotplot(1:10~1:10, horizontal=FALSE, scales=list(x=list(draw=FALSE))) does.

Many thanks for showing your thought process. This suggests that there is no simple way to maintain automation of method selection while adjusting font size, but it does narrow the answer down to a few default functions including lines2, maxvar.qp, and maxvar.points, which show up inside the get("defaultpf.trellis") call from default.picker("trellis"). Whew!

The solution for the first points works perfectly. The solution for the end-points does not appear to work as expected. Adding the panel function: panel.points(tapply(x,groups[subscripts],'[',length(x)), tapply(y,groups[subscripts],'[',length(y)), cex=2, pch=20,...) does not yield any points.
