I am not sure what you mean by exceeding 64bits with 32-bit digits? As you can see I have 32-bit digits, and was planning to use the 64-bit word size to manage the full range.

Thanks for demystifying the process. I guess this is what most autoconf programs do. Would you suggest by hand, or have some tool do the hard work? I only know of autoconf and it seems complex to start a small project with.

I see. By the way, do you think there's anyway to avoid this processor gunk and stick with int/long? I really just need to have two types, where one is at least double the width in size. I guess char and short would do the trick, but I'd prefer to use the larger datatypes such as int/long/long long if possible.

You mean to enclose the defines in double quotes? Anyways, handy tip. I thought this would be documented in the printf manpage, but I was wondering how C99 would deal with these types. Thanks.

By last 9 digits, you mean the number of decimal digits that can be stored in a single digit of the base. That seems reasonable. But there will be a digit that will be in the intersection of two consecutive digits. I just don't know how to handle that case (yet).

@Rex - By academic I meant homework, but still of a project nature. @GregS - Thanks, I just clarified with my prof, that we're allowed to use fixed-size arrays, so I think I'll use 32 or 64-bit and a fixed size to store 1000 decimal digits. @J.F. Sebastian: Thanks, I've been looking at it. It's a little hard to comprehend because of the deep nature of gmp, but it certainly has given a good starting point.

Thanks for the information. Performance is definitely a concern so I will stick to half the word size. My only other issue is word size may vary across machines. The professor/grader/etc. will all be using different machines so I want to keep portability in mind (including endianness).

Thanks Dale. This looks like to be the correct method to enforce what I originally wanted. The only issue is the transposed structure hinders my code. It appears the other answer that suggests dynamically constructing the multidimensional array and passing in the range would be more suitable and clearer to understand.
