Nice, it takes 4.5s for 39989 but 6.1s for 39999. It support this hypothesis. Your code probably better utilize modern CPU parallel and vector behavior. May be CPU cache coherency works better for you too.

I'm afraid it is not it. You will break sum searching when some of arguments of addition is too log, but there can be some other bigger number with shorter result. Look at mine C code what I just added. It can compute 39999 in 6s.

You can stop looking for better sums when one of your arguments plus minimal possible value plus operand i.e. +2 is not less the best what you are so far. For example you want write 22. There is multiplication 2*11. So go for 11. It can be 2+9. So you don't need try 3+8, 4+7 and so. Then you have 229+* so far, it is 5 character so when you will go on, you know when first argument is not less then 3, you don't have to try make second one. It saves a lot of work.

For example if you have solution using multiplication with length 9 and some of your best solutions for numbers j <- 1..n/2 are longer than 7, you don't have to finding solutions for all n-j counterparts, especially if you are not searching for all solutions but one.
