I solved my immediate problem of having 'too much' mass. The problem was the objects had a very high density vs the circle! I also like this idea of free acceleration from the mass. Thanks.

7 months later ... I have a new physics simulator using a fixed time step. I followed Glenn Fiedler's timestep article as a reference.

I increased the time steps to the power of 3 and 4 and noticed that the ball's position skips when the system lags. The good news is that the -Y velocity is low enough to not fire an impulse. The bad news is that everything is slower now. Hm, it actually never gets enough velocity for an initial bounce either.
