Not sure, what you mean with not multi-tasking here, are you targeting a distributed memory system? If not, what is wrong with the & solution? If you are on a cluster with distributed memory, don't you have scheduling system, which allows you to submit many runs at the same time? If you do want to do this within an MPI application, you might get there using the process spawning functionality, I guess. Otherwise you also can tell MPI to use different arguments for different ranks. Are you looking for an MPI solution?

Writing debug stuff into distinct files for each process is the best approach, I think, at least for small number of processes. Anyway, two other options could be: use mpi_gather to collect the data and have one process printing them all together. Use a parallel debugger to have a look at specific values.

It is always helpful to know more, imho... ;) I don't think it will really help to write scientific programs faster, but it might help to optimize such programs, even without actually writing stuff in assembly, which I'd think would be a rather bad idea in most circumstances.

I think some MPI libraries connect stdin to /dev/null, thus you can not read from stdin on the processes.

Also, setting h1b always to 0.001 in the loops looks strange as well. Is there any reason, why you want to have the code in F77 fixed format?

You unconditionally set your deltah to 0.001 in your 20 loop. Which essentially renders your conditional setting to a negative value after the second loop kinda useless (its only active for the first i).

I don't really understand your question in the edit, your code is missing and end if for the dchisq.gt.0 if at the end of the loop, but what do you refer to with h1 and which neighbor do you mean?

Of course you could use a mod operation as well in Fortran, aside from letting your array start from 0 or any other integer, you can always shift your indices into the mod space you'd like and shift it back afterwards. Thus, no problem at all using a mod based solution in Fortran...

Fortran can write VTK data files itself, if you want to get the new VTK format using XML, you however need to do a base64 encoding, which is probably best done in C. Via the ISO-C-Binding you can also call VTK itself from Fortran. This might give you an idea: szaghi.github.io/Lib_VTK_IO/index.html

Well, not sure, if I am the right one to answer this, as I am not working on MPI implementations, but basically the point is, that work on pending communications is done during any MPI calls. Thus, whenever you call MPI it might progress pending communication operations, that are not related to the actual call at hand.

You say, that this is Fortran 77, but from the rest of the description in your question it reads as if you are trying to use coarrays which are a F2008 feature? What kind of parallelism do you actually use?

I am not really sure, if it is a problem. I dimly remember to have had issues long time ago. However, for array indicies it definitely might be an issue, especially on 32bit machines, so my attitude is to rather avoid long integers for loop counts as well as array indices. Yet, if portability is not your foremost concern it might be fine enough to use long integers here. Still, I wouldn't mix integer kinds in this case. Best thing to do is to try this with various compilers, I think.

So, how does x look like and what is nx? You have to keep in mind, that nx is the number of double precisions sent to each process here. Are you sure, your nx is not actually 0, or of the wrong datatype/kind?
