@Neil G: I added some estimates for the performance so one can see that there is only a difference by 0,1% in the number of comparisons in this special situation. But even for the single insert of a new minimum it is not clear what performs better in reality for 100 elements. I added some arguments. I even don't believe that there are only about 7 comparisons in the worst case: if a new value is inserted at the root node there must be at least two comparison to decide in which subtree should be used for storeing the new value. so we have about 14 comparisons.

yes but a heap does more: it allows the insertion/removing of an new element and finding the new minimum in O(log(n)) steps. I stated that a heap is not necessary because: 1)only a small number of elements will be inserted. 2) the O-Notation does not say anything about the size of the constant factor. Maybe the usage of a 100 element array has almost the same performance then maintaining a 100 element heap.
