@JerryCoffin: Also B is 25% faster than A. So 20% more memory references is resulting in a 25% increase in speed. Store forwarding does mean a memory reference isn't always a memory reference... But still, I have no idea what is going on here.

@JerryCoffin: I have put my own observations in an answer that is not really an answer. I have tried this six ways to Sunday, and I swear I always get the same (divergent) speeds for the loops. What model(s) of CPU have you tried?

Interesting idea, so I tried disabling TurboBoost and related clock-scaling mechanisms and pinned my clock speed to 2.9GHz. For me, superCalculationA is now 3120ms and superCalculationB is 2437ms, and it does not matter what order I run them or if I run them several times etc. I don't think we even have the start of an explanation here...

Which cache do you mean, exactly? There is almost no memory footprint here at all. (Talking about the unoptimized case. The -O2/-O3 behavior is relatively uninteresting.) Hard to argue with your empirical results, but I still do not (yet) see an explanation for them.

@MatteoItalia: Yeah, I would like to understand what is going on in the unoptimized case. The assembly for the second routine certainly looks like it should be slower, which means I don't understand the CPU well enough. Anyone know how to contact Mysticial?

No you echo it unquoted. Put quotes around it like in my comment. Otherwise the shell will split on whitespace, passing multiple arguments to echo, which can fool you.

"GIT_VERSION" should be "$GIT_VERSION" in the second if. With that fix, that check works for me. I don't have "drush". Try echo "${DRUSH_VERSION}" (with the quotes) to see if there is funny whitespace in there.

(1) It is not a bug if the OP does not forbid it, and encapsulation is usually desirable. Your solution breaks encapsulation by forcing you to know the type of object at the call site; you might as well just use union { Flying *f; Swimming *s; }. (2) Your AnyBase looks like a common base class to me. (3) He requires "Any object that derives from both Flying and Swimming": What are you talking about? His example struct A and struct B do not inherit from any common classes at all, and he specifically said he does not want them to. That is, I read the question fine; did you?
