I am not sure I understand your suggestion. Sorting vertices sounds great for finding nearest neigbours but not applicable for finding intersections. As an example consider the triangle: {(-1,-1),(-1,+1),(+1,0)} and the point (0,0). The closest vertice according to your suggestion is (+1,0). However the intersection with the edge {(-1,-1),(-1,+1)} is not found.
