@Thomas James, I didn't try the example with gfortran - I'm using xlf instead. Are you sure you have the correct commands/syntax for your compile steps? The .f wrapper should be fine (replace the .f90). If you would like I can send you my Makefile that I used to compile the code - just let me know. I tried pasting it here but it isn't suitable as a "comment".

I figured out the issue - it is entirely unrelated to the FFT calls. In my code (not the above example), I had made k a 1D array but had been accessing it as a scalar index value. There shouldn't be anything wrong with the above code. Woops! Just so this is still useful for other folks, I did end up finding some code online that contained many very helpful examples of calling FFTW routines with Fortran: people.sc.fsu.edu/~jburkardt/f_src/fftw3/fftw3_prb.f90

You're right on the money with the Power system. I'll give the collapse clauses a shot tomorrow in addition to the compiler flags. I also realized it's unnecessary to be doing the calculation across the entire grid (for my problem) - so that should speed things up considerably as well. Thanks again! I had no idea stack overflow was such a great resource!

Thanks! This was very helpful. I'm giving this a try at the moment. Unfortunately I still have a ways to go to get the performance level that I need. I have access to a pretty big machine (64 cores per processor) - but perhaps I may need to combine this with MPI to get the necessary performance.
