Thank you for the answer. I am interested in the maximum memory utilization (not just an upper bound, as that is several orders of magnitude too high). I tried tracing brk(), but on my OS (OSX) malloc() seems to use mmap(). I was unsuccessful in getting a reasonable total value out of tracing mmap()/munmap(). Tracing something like number of currently resident memory pages would be ideal, but I have no idea how to do that.

This approach turned out to be several orders of magnitude faster for me than using uistack. The execution time went from 15 minutes to less than one second.

Alan: That is an interesting idea. The problem is that in my case, the vector lengths are almost geometrically distributed without an upper bound. The overhead would thus probably be prohibitive. One other idea would be to concatenate all vectors into a one dimensional array, and in addition keep one matrix of start indices, and another with lengths.

Amro: I have added some benchmark results to the question. This operation is the single dominating bottleneck. I never imagined that the for-loop could be faster though.
