On another note, if I were able to calculate the scale factor required to enlarge the image so that the current state, whatever it may be is always valid, this would be better still. And you may have inadvertently got me 90% of the way there with your answer.

@spektre yeah scaling is in the clamp function. photo.w and photo.h are actually the scaled values (with the scale factor accessible), anyway thanks, i'll have a play as you suggest and see where it gets me :)

@Spektre you are correct... my comment was premature and I am still indeed searching for the answer. with regards to where the aspect ratio is mentioned, it is where I state that rectangle B has exactly the same dimensions as rectangle A when they are not rotated. I will clarify the question somewhat.
