no, and not for lack of effort. Eventually it fixed itself. We stopped using trigger.io reload (but I really think/hope that's not what was causing it)

The rule of thumb for approximating latency is that RDBMS access is an order of magnitude slower than a remote in-memory DB access: 10ms for disk access vs 1ms for network access (in the same data centre). Where would you place a SSD backed RDBMS? Can you still say that it's an order of magnitude slower?

@tadman: Added code. I know this is strange - that's why I'm so confused. It's possible that the GC is reporting stas in a weird way, but it seemed to give logical numbers for Bignums as well as other types I tried.

@JonathanGray That's basically what Redis does, that's how they achive high speed while being persistant..but it's not an RDBMS

Thanks Dave! However, this will give you the best match for the first few guys, but the rest of the guys will get either poor matches, or no matches at all. Weighted network flow is an optimization problem that tries maximize the weight of all the matches

In my case, I want to find all 3rd degree friends that match certain criteria (gender, age, distance, etc). Depending on the network size, the traversal will return anywhere from 1000 (20 friends/ user) to 100,000+ (50+ friends/user) matches. Would it make more sense to the retrieve the friends list from neo4J and perform the filtering elsewhere(Lucene or even an RDBMS with proper indexes)?

Thanks Michael! It's just that if we have 10 types relationships, iterating through all of them just to find one type doesn't sound efficient. But I guess the performance is still constant (with growing number of nodes/relationships) as opposed to a RDBMS B-tree which is log(n)
