THESIS

Bayesian Network classification algorithm implementation Director: Ph.D. Jesús Cerquides Departamento de Matemática Aplicada y Análisis de la Universitat de Barcelona

The project is based on Bayesian networks, which are one of the fields of Artificial Intelligence that is most likely to be implemented in the near future. Specifically it is a learning algorithm in C++ language that has been integrated into the PNL library (Probabilistic Network Library), maintained by the Intel Russia Research Lab.

The implemented learning algorithm is a classification algorithm.

In summary, this project is useful to observe a number of cases that have happened over time, which are stored. There will come a time when, based on all the stored cases (which also could be defined as experience), we can make a probabilistic query to the program. For example, "how likely is occurring X situation?".

To clarify this explanation, let's see an example:

Think you are in the field of medicine, for example in a medical consultation. The doctor sees patients with various ailments and diseases. Every patient who enters the consultation is added to a program (which uses the algorithm developed in this project) indicating what happens and what symptoms does he have. Over time, the doctor has diagnosed many patients and many diseases, which had no problem thanks to his knowledge. But suppose a patient comes later with some strange symptoms and the doctor doubts the diagnosis.

Here is where we can make a query to the program. For example, suppose that the doctor does not know whether this patient has cancer. Thus, after introducing the symptoms, he makes the question "what is the likelihood that this patient have cancer?", after which the algorithm learns from his own experience, and calculates a probability, which displays as: there is X% chance of having cancer, and Y% of not having cancer.

The project was archived in the library of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Barcelona, on February 21, 2005.
