The IT Developer will serve as a Global Health Corps Fellow with Village Health Works in Burundi for one year. Global Health Corps aims to mobilize a global community of emerging leaders for global health equity. Global Health Corps does this by providing promising young professionals with year-long, paid fellowships with outstanding organizations working on the frontlines of global health.

VHW's global health and development programs bring lasting change to the world’s most impoverished and vulnerable people. Job Overview
Village Health Works is looking for a professional with a solid technical background to maintain our existing IT systems and apply technology in novel ways to understand our patient population and improve our clinical services. The IT fellow will help further develop VHW’s electronic medical records system, manage VHW’s IT needs, and provide valuable technical training to VHW staff and community members. The fellow will work closely with VHW’s leadership to develop effective systems that use technology to further our mission. and that are sustainable and suitable for the organization’s growing needs.
Responsibilities
Electronic Medical Records System Improvement – VHW currently stores their data in a networked Access database with Visual Basic extensions. The IT fellow will continue to expand and adapt this system to meet the clinical, reporting and M&E needs of VHW. Specific responsibilities would depend on the candidate’s interest and experience. Ideally, the fellow would write custom front-end interfaces, put new features in place to improve the consistency and availability of data, create compelling visualizations of existing data to help external agencies understand our work, and create prediction models to facilitate supply chain decisions. There would also be an opportunity to write code to migrate existing records to a more sophisticated database model such as OpenMRS. The fellow will collaborate closely with the leadership in Burundi and NYC to improve the integrity and usefulness of the data in aggregate reports and point-of-care delivery.
Network Maintenance and General IT - The fellow would work to design and implement protocols for data protection, equipment maintenance, and other key IT functions. This would include virus protection, regular data backup, securing sensitive organizational information, promoting good computing practices, keeping software up-to-date, preserving internet connectivity and network functionality, and maintaining a comprehensive understanding of how computing resources are being used. The team of IT fellows would assume most of the responsibility for the day to day functionality of our ten laptops, three routers, wireless LAN network and satellite.
Training and Education - The IT fellow is expected to work with staff and community members to enhance computer literacy. Village Health Works provides instruction in computer use to community members and students as part of our vocational program. The IT fellow will build on this work, including both teaching and development of continuing curriculum.
Desired Experience and Skills
Applicants need not have every specific skill listed below; a subset of the skills / experience listed is fine. We are looking for applicants with a solid technical background who can learn and adapt.
* Bachelors degree in computer science, information systems, or related field
* 1 - 2 years work experience in software engineering or network administration
* Demonstrated experience with SQL and Java
* Solid understanding of object-oriented programming models
* Familiarity with Visual Basic a plus
* Advanced knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems, and ability to troubleshoot common issues
* Ability to maintain a local network, including router configuration and network administration
* Ability and desire to learn new skills quickly
* Ability to effectively communicate issues and resolutions to all levels of the organization
* Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive customer and internal information
* The ideal candidate will have language skills in English and French
* Previous exposure to IT in a health care setting a plus
* Must have a commitment to VHW’s mission
* Demonstrated flexibility and ability to adapt to different work and living environments
Living Conditions
Fellows will live in shared staff residence on the clinic site in rural Kigutu, which is two hours away from the capital city of Bujumbura. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend from GHC to cover all housing, food, and other costs incurred during the fellowship.
