We are looking for engineers to expand our team of lab automation software developers, working at the interface of life science and software engineering on the Antha project.
Named by the World Economic Forum as one of the world's 30 Technology Pioneers 2016, Synthace is re-imagining how we work with biology, exponentially improving the speed and quality of the final results. This is made possible through our high-level language and operating system for labs, Antha, which is already impacting how scientists work with biology in major companies like Dow, Merck and GSK.
We're looking to hire at different levels within the team - Senior Engineer and Lead/Manager.
This team mainly works in C# and .Net Core, as these are well suited to building high level drivers for the various types of robitic automation equipment you find in laboratories. Don't worry if you're not an expert in C# - we'll also consider C++, Java or other OO languages as it's not a huge leap to learn C# from them.
The most important thing in deciding whether this is the right role for you is whether you have an appetite for writing software that directly controls real world objects (IoT of a sort). If you're excited by the idea of unpicking software and reverse engineering drivers to make robots work in cool ways (sometimes with the help of documentation or APIs, sometimes not!), this is the role for you! You'll be working within a tight-knit, multidisciplinary development team on exciting projects with plenty of technical challenges to get your teeth into.
- Develop drivers and output processing for various robots, incubators and sophisticated laboratory equipment
- Contribute to the implementation of the generic driver and data processing framework
- Manage deadlines and priorities in a dynamic environment that blends software and wet-lab development
- Develop new interfaces and representations for equipment not presently supported (senior position)
- Develop and maintain relationships with external parties such as equipment vendors and integration providers (senior position)
- BA/BS degree in computer science / electrical engineering or equivalent work experience
- Good programming and software engineering skills, preferably in C#, C/C++, or Go
- Excellence in both problem solving and reverse engineering solutions
- Ability to deliver high quality software to a tight schedule
- Excellent communication skills are also a must in our fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment
- Experience with Lab Automation software (required for senior position)
Bonus points for:
- Team management experience a significant plus but not essential (senior position)
- Experience with Lab Automation hardware
- Experience with device APIs / drivers
- Hardware experience / embedded systems experience

Interviewing with Synthace
We use a simple 4 stage process:-
Initial 30 minute Phone Screen with our internal recruitment team. We'll ask a couple of technical questions, but the main purpose of this call is to understand more about your interests and strengths, and to share more information about Synthace. It's a two way conversation to discover if we're right for you.
Online Skills Test. We know there are split opinions about coding tests, but we have a really high technical bar and this is one way of ensuring everyone has the same level of core skills.
Technical Video Interview. This is a 45 minute session, during which you'll talk through and solve a coding problem with one of our engineering team. It also gives you a chance to discuss the challenges they're working on, and where you could potentially have the most impact.
On-site Assessment. This involves 4 back to back 45 minute interviews and a 30 minute tour of our lab. There are 2 coding interviews and 1 architecture interview - all using whiteboards - as well as a behavioural interview. You'll get to check out the office, meet a cross section of the team(s) you'd be working with, and see how your work would directly impact the Lab team.
Your experience is important to us, and we try to give feedback quickly at each stage, including making offer decisions within 48 hours of the final interview in most cases.
