Kapsch TrafficCom is currently searching for a Traffic Engineer in our Austin, TX offices. Traffic engineers working on Dynamic Pricing assist in working with civil engineers and software engineers to design ITS systems, analyze traffic and toll rate data, and model freeway systems using Trans modeler. This includes reviewing civil drawings from professional engineers, working with customers and software engineers to meet system requirements, modeling the roadways based off the drawings, coming up with origin-destination matrices, estimating value of time distributions, and modeling driver route choice. In addition, once a system is installed, it requires analyzing data from roadway sensors, as well as how toll rates affect driver route choice, and assisting software engineers in creating algorithms and control systems for the roadway.
Systems generally include radar sensors that measure volume, speed, and sensor occupancy along the freeway corridor and feed their data to a central database. From there the dynamic pricing software calculates traffic metrics and determines a suitable toll rate, which is fed to DMS signs along the corridor.
This position requires up to 10% travel
Required skills & experience:
- A depth of knowledge in traffic metrics such as volume, flow, speed, density, and level of service is required.
- Understanding how they relate to each other, and how to calculate them from sensor data.
- Familiarity with traffic simulations, including demand modeling.
- Ability to read civil engineering drawings.
- Ability to analyze data, calculating historic patterns and deviations, and creating graphs and charts to convey that information.
- Ability to present and work with customers to realize system designs and propose new systems.
Additional beneficial skills:
- Experience working with databases, using SQL or web based interfaces.
- Ability to convert entrance and exit counts to most likely origin-destination matrices highly desirable.
- Strong math skills, with experience in logit models, price elasticity, and/or linear algebra and some basic calculus.
- 2+ years of experience in some or all of the following: traffic simulation, and traffic management.
- Additional beneficial education and work experience:
- Engineering degree in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering.
- PE License a huge plus
- Required language skills and computer literacy:
- Superior English writing and communication skills
- Working knowledge of some type of graphing software (ploy.ly, Matlab, Excel)
- Additional beneficial language skills and computer literacy:
- SOAP UI
- Working with Oracle DB and SQL
- Experience with Transmodeler, VISSIM, or other traffic simulation tools
Required education and work experience:
