The 8 weeks of Startup Institute will catapult you into a new career at a startup that aligns your passion with your profession. All courses are taught by professionals and entrepreneurs in New York's startup community, allowing you to learn from and interact with founders, CTOs, and software engineers who are currently hiring.
Web Development Track
The Web Development track will give you advanced knowledge of Ruby on Rails, time to hack, and mentorship from experienced developers. The track is focused on teaching Rails to developers who have an existing grasp on programming for the web, and have proven their ability to learn quickly. In the first two days you will have a solid understanding of a model-view-controller architecture, followed by a series of Rails labs helping you build a Rails app. From here you will focus on a pair programming project with a strong focus on agile development tactics. In addition, the sessions will give you exposure to topics such as test driven development, Git, AWS, Heroku, node.js, JavaScript, and mobile-first methodology.
The following is an outline of the Web Development curriculum experience:
Ruby on Rails Essentials
- Setting up a dev environment: Homebrew, Xcode, RVM, Git
- Unix shell basics
- Selecting, using, and creating gems
- MVC basics: intro to model-view-controller in Rails
- Git: collaborating effectively in a team using GitHub
- Whiteboarding: creating a Rails app from scratch and designing via pseudocode
- Test Driven Development: RSpec and Cucumber
- How to write maintainable code
- Cloud concepts: Heroku and AWS
- Release management and proactive prevention of production failures
- DevOps in an Agile startup environment
- Infrastructure automation: EC2 API Tools and Chef
- SQL and NoSQL using Postgres and Mongo
- Javascript basics: Anonymous Functions, JSON, Prototypical Inheritance, and callbacks
- jQuery: element selection, DOM manipulation
- Node basics: REPL, NPM, long-running objects and concurrency
- Front-End /Back-End integration using AJAX
Build Your Network
Throughout the program you will have a series of coaching sessions focused on clearing out blockers that are inhibiting you from reaching out, interacting with, and being employed at your dream job. The remainder of your time will be full of building up your network, and ensuring you are driving towards your goal of obtaining your dream job at a startup.
The Student Expose
Startup Institute ends with the Student Expose, where you will establish your identity and brand in New York's startup community through a one-minute pitch to a packed room of startups looking to hire.
