The LMAX Group is the world’s leading independent operator of institutional execution venues for FX and crypto currency trading - established to bring a fair and transparent level playing field to all participants in the market.
Our award winning proprietary technology is at the core of our business. Building and supporting robust, scalable, ultra-high performance technology - capable of executing 100,000 orders per second with end-to-end latencies under 100 microseconds - presents a unique set of challenges.
We love diving into challenging problems and developing our deep understanding of our applications and the systems they run on so that we can deliver new features while continuing to provide the consistently high performance that our customers expect.
Our Values
A commitment to quality: A system based on “fast feedback cycles” is a great way to build a stable, well performing system. To support this we employ a significant amount of static analysis, automated testing, automated deployment and continuous integration. LMAX was an early adopter and continues to be a leader in the area of Continuous Delivery (one of the authors worked for us for several years).
Working collaboratively: Software is not built in a vacuum, people with blended skill sets working together produce the best results. We use practices like collaborative design and pair programming. This allows us to work together on design and implementation as well as sharing knowledge and helping new starters get up to speed quickly. For testing we eschew a “throw it over the wall” mentality and developers will write and do a lot of their own testing, which frees up the test analysts to do higher value exploratory testing.
Keeping it simple: Modern software systems are very complex. Simplicity helps us build a more reliable and higher performing system. We work hard to ensure our systems are as simple as possible to solve the problems at hand. Unfortunately, simple isn’t easy and we will often put in that extra bit of effort to get us to a satisfactory solution.
Always improving: We think we do a number of things well (many of our team have spoken at conferences about how we build software and handle challenging performance problems), but we recognise that we are far from perfect and can always get better. We regularly examine our successes and failures to look at how we can improve. We have a generous training budget for our technology staff.
Tech Stack
The majority of our code base is written in Java which continues to be our language of choice - we stay up to date and use the latest versions and language features. There is also a decent chunk of web technology (Javascript,HTML and CSS) and SQL too.
We have highly scalable, distributed, event-driven, service-oriented architecture which is easy to navigate and helps us rapidly build new features. The whole exchange can run on a single workstation - which is great for testing and debugging - and scales to run over 10's of highly tuned servers where performance is critical.
We are proud of our ability to meet our stringent performance goals while running on commodity hardware (no need for FPGAs or water-cooling here). We achieve this through mechanical sympathy - building software that works with, not against the systems on which it is running. Pushing the boundaries of what is possible means that at times we need to dig deep into the internals of our systems to better understand how they behave, and our work can feel more like a research project than routine development.
While we'd love it if you came to us with deep knowledge of all of our technology stack, we don't expect this and so long as you share our values and have strong technical skills we will provide all of the support and training that you'll need to succeed in our team.
Our salaries are competitive and benefits vary dependent on whether you join our London or Auckland office. You will benefit from working in a collaborative and relaxed environment where workflow is managed to free up Friday afternoons to work on self chosen projects outside the immediate business priorities.
