I'm trying to use PyInstaller. I've used it several times in the past on this same system and been able to successfully package my programs to .exe files, but now something isn't working and I'm not sure what changed.

It gives me some errors ("TypeError: a bytes-like object is required, not 'str'" occurs several times), but I'm so new at this I don't understand what they mean or what to do about them. So I'm just going to post the whole damn output in the hopes that someone can tell me how to fix this.

This same error happens for every program I try to package using PyInstaller, regardless of what modules the program uses. Even simple test programs that don't import anything are giving me this same error. It also happens whether I use the --onefile command or leave it out.

I had this same problem when trying to make a version 4.1 of my program. There is something about the "." between 4 and 1 that is throwing a wrench in the operation. I renamed my file "Program_V4_1.py" and it worked.

    I encountered the same issue, with PyInstaller 3.2: I had a filename in the format x.y.py, and it choked on the extra period. Upon renaming it to something with a single period before the file extension, it worked like a charm.

I also got the same error when i wanted to build an .exe with Pyinstaller.

I used this command to build it:

pyinstaller.exe --onefile --noconsole --icon=icon.ico appbuilder.py

That gave me the folowing error:

(...)python35-32\lib\site-packages\PyInstaller\building\utils.py", line 521, in _load_code

It turned out that pyinstaller.exe is case sensitive, when i tried:

pyinstaller.exe --onefile --noconsole --icon=icon.ico AppBuilder.py

I got the desired result. (Notice the uppercase charters in the filename)

Conclusion:

You may want to check if the file name the script you're converting is exactly the same.

  • this is actually what my issue was. Doesn't appear the other parts of the path need to follow case but the .py file name must.

Just run the repair function in on the python installer. It should remove the ugly.

  • I ran the repair tool, and I'm still getting the exact same output when I try to use PyInstaller. I have, in the past, tried to uninstall and reinstall Python to fix a different issue, and now I'm wondering if I broke it even more. Is there a way to completely remove old files and settings to start with a totally fresh Python installation?
