I want to convert a org.w3c.dom.Document object to a String. I'm using Java 6 and am open to using any (completely free) technology that is up to the task. I tried the solution from this thread -- Is there a more elegant way to convert an XML Document to a String in Java than this code?, where they have

DOMImplementationLS domImplementation = (DOMImplementationLS) doc.getImplementation();
LSSerializer lsSerializer = domImplementation.createLSSerializer();
String html = lsSerializer.writeToString(doc);  

but was greeted with the following horrendous exception …

  • identity transformation (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_transform) is your best bet if you don't want to depend on some sort of a serializer. The two answers that's been given already do just that. Running an empty transformation like that does the identity transform behind the scenes. Apr 27, 2012 at 19:11

If you are ok to do transformation, you may try this.

DocumentBuilderFactory domFact = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
DocumentBuilder builder = domFact.newDocumentBuilder();
Document doc = builder.parse(st);
DOMSource domSource = new DOMSource(doc);
StringWriter writer = new StringWriter();
StreamResult result = new StreamResult(writer);
TransformerFactory tf = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
Transformer transformer = tf.newTransformer();
transformer.transform(domSource, result);
System.out.println("XML IN String format is: \n" + writer.toString());

    I would not write a unit test for such code. You would be testing framework plumbing more than your application logic. Checking if the plumbing 'works' can occur as part of an integration or end-to-end test. Jun 17, 2019 at 12:38

  • I am getting "xmlns" attribute in some of the tags like "link" tag. <link href="my.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" xmlns="w3.org/1999/xhtml">. Is there any way to avoid that? Jul 5, 2020 at 17:48

This worked for me, as documented on this page:

TransformerFactory tf = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
Transformer trans = tf.newTransformer();
StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
trans.transform(new DOMSource(document), new StreamResult(sw));
return sw.toString();

With that, you can do either doc.toXmlString() or call the getStringFromDocument(doc) function.
