I'm trying to build my Ruby on Rails project from github on Travis-CI, but I 'm running into a migration problem. It runs a rake task for migration, but it complains about the same migration step after that.

It follows my .travis.yml file:

  • Hi rafael, I guess you're running your test-environment on a sqlite3 db with in-memory usage, right? Because I am struggling with the same problem combined of: - travis-ci - sqlite {database: ":memory:"} I am also wondering, because this setting is also recommended / given as an example in the travis-ci doc. – loybert Jan 22 '14 at 17:19

This blog post helped me tremendously when I was trying to get my Rails 3.2 app working with Travis CI, and write a .travis.yml file that actually worked. Here's mine for your reference, so hope it helps:

  - RAILS_ENV=test bundle exec rake db:migrate --trace
  - bundle exec rake db:test:prepare
  - bundle exec rspec spec/
before_script:
  - mysql -e 'create database my_app_test'
  - psql -c 'create database my_app_test' -U postgres
bundler_args: --binstubs=./bundler_stubs

Instead of running rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=test run rake db:test:prepare instead.

This is because rake db:migrate will run all the migrations against your test database, which could take a very long time if you had a lot of migrations. The db:test:prepare task will not do that, instead it will just set up the test database with the schema from db/schema.rb.

Give that a shot and see if that works.

    This is generally a bad idea. You want your test environment to find problems that could potentially happen in production. In production, you will be running migrations, not loading your schema from your db/schema.rb. In order to find potential problems with migrations that could happen on production, it is better to run rake db:migrate – Brett Hardin May 27 '15 at 16:39

The solution that fixed the problem for me was running: rake db:schema:load instead of rake db:migrate RAILS_ENV=test
