In order to improve readability in my code I want to use plain words instead index numbers, when creating JSON object:

this is my database table school_subjects:

as you can see I'm getting this error:

however this code works fine:

  • Any reason why you shouldn't be using DictCursor? Just change your cursor call to cursor = mydb.cursor(MySQLdb.cursors.DictCursor). – Scott Lowrey Feb 4 '15 at 20:11

The cursor object has a .description attribute that tells you the names of each column, use that to turn a row into a dict:

cursor.execute("""
                    SELECT id, name
                    FROM school_subjects
            """)
columns = [desc[0] for desc in cursor.description]
result = []
for row in rows:
    row = dict(zip(columns, row))
    result.append(row)

  • That's because there was a actual error in the line, as well as being overly verbose. I updated it with a direct dict call. – Martijn Pieters Mar 22 '14 at 13:07
