"Abcdefg" and "%d" are stored as string constants in the read-only section of the program.

My question is where is "Z" stored? Shouldn't that be present in the read-only section as well? I read somewhere that during runtime memory is allocated for "Z" and sizeof() is applied on that.

I'm quite skeptical about that explanation. And even if it is true, what is the indication to the executable that only 2 bytes are to be allocated and "Z" should be stored in it?

  • this is a compiler specific issue. some compilers have optimizations. They know sizeof("z") is a constant so it might replace that with 2 at compile time. – Ionut Hulub Oct 15 '12 at 14:03
  • don't use objdump for stuff like that but the compiler option -S, it produces readable assembler – Jens Gustedt Oct 15 '12 at 15:13

It's easy for the compiler to calculate the result of sizeof("Z") and hence it puts the calculated value in compile time instead of keeping "Z" somewhere and then doing it. Hope it explains.

Considering that sizeof("Z") is a constant expression, I could imagine that the compiler substitutes it with the resulting integer value.

It is easier to look at things directly in assembler instead of objdump:

This here is produced by gcc with -O3 -S. As you can clearly see the 2 is directly moved into a register and then the print functionality is effected.

BTW, your print format was wrong, gcc should have warned you about that.

sizeof("Z") is optimized to 2 at compile time. This may be stored at the location marked with offset 80483a0 in the .text section of the executable file, which is displayed (with wrong byte order) as 02000000. This is preceded by c7442404. The bytes c7 44 24 04 02 00 00 00 form the instruction movl 0x4(%esp), $0x00000002. This moves 2 onto the stack, which may be preparation for passing it as an argument to printf.

  • Thanks for that. As for the byte order, it's Little Endian, which should explain the order of arrangement. Since C7 is the opcode for mov, I should imagine that c7042498 which follows 02000000 should be the move instruction to move 2 onto the stack rather than c7442404 if I were to keep endianness in mind.   • @VSN: The instruction decode is as I stated; the bytes 02, 00, 00, and 00 are part of the instruction that begins with the preceding c7 04 24 98. (It would be impossible for an immediate value to precede an instruction, as the instruction decoder examines low-addressed bytes first and must decode the instruction before it can determine an immediate value is present.) The following bytes c7 44 24 04 84 04 08 e8 form the instruction movl (%esp), $0x08048498, which puts the address of the string "%d\n" on the stack. That string can be observed at offset 0x08048498 in the executable. – Eric Postpischil Oct 16 '12 at 12:30
