MySQLdb install error - _mysql.c:44:23: error: my_config.h: No such file or directory

Question

I'm trying to install MySQLdb extension, but I get this error any idea what may be the cause? Could be something with permissions? I'm using Mac OX Lion....

This is a part of the error a got. Django is installed fine, but I need to install this extension. Thanks for any help.

you can add manually the header file into mysql include directory (download from github repo):

sudo wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/paulfitz/mysql-connector-c/master/include/my_config.h -O /usr/include/mysql/my_config.h

Retry pip install

sudo pip install MySQL-python

As found here you need to copy my_config.h to /usr/include/mysql, then pip install MySQL-python.

usually when you get these kinds of errors, you are missing development packages - you need to install the header files as they don't come with mysqldb.

i've not done this on apple personally, but here's a link to their article on how to go about such a thing.

after you've installed the source, mysqldb should be able to compile and install without issues.

I had a similar issue and fixed it with:

brew install mysql-client
echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/mysql-client/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bash_profile
source ~/.bash_profile
pip install MySQL-python

1)libmysqlclient-dev is installed

2)my_config.h is in /usr/include/mysql

Install using deb package from https://packages.debian.org/buster/python-mysqldb

Dependencies are apt install libmariadb3 mariadb-common for the above package.
