I'm using Entity Framework 5 with the Code First approach. I need to read the return value from a stored procedure; I am already reading output parameters and sending input parameters, but I don't know how to read the return value.

Is it possible?

Here is the code that I use to call the stored procedure:

I found it! I can read the return value with an output parameter that has to be used in this way:

// define a new output parameter
var returnCode = new SqlParameter();
returnCode.ParameterName = "@ReturnCode";
returnCode.SqlDbType = SqlDbType.Int;
returnCode.Direction = ParameterDirection.Output;

// assign the return code to the new output parameter and pass it to the sp

  • @Mahesh you only need to add OUT if as in this case @StatusLog was an output parameter, it has no bearing on the return value.

    Setting the return value parameter to Direction = ParameterDirection.Output does work which is really strange. Surely it should be ParameterDirection.ReturnValue?

  • @Lankymart Probably the "exec @ ReturnCode =" can be omitted because the example is using an output variable. That should make sense why ReturnValue is not working.

The solution provided by Daniele wasn't working for me, until I found this blog post from Diego Vega, which explains that:

You will need to read the whole results before you can access the values of output parameters (...) This is just how stored procedures work and not specific to this EF feature.

Also, in my case, I wasn't returning an entity, I only had to execute the stored procedure, so I replaced Item with object in _context.Database.SqlQuery<object>.

Here is the sample code:

    I was able to duplicate your error, so yes, the variable names do matter, but in this case the problem isn't in the stored procedure, but on the SQL call, so make sure the variable name specified in "exec @ReturnCode = ... matches the one in var returnCode = new SqlParameter("@ReturnCode", SqlDbType.Int); Jul 12, 2016 at 15:46
  • ok so problem with my code was i was trying to type cast the return type as var data = _context.Database.SqlQuery<int>(sql, returnCode, code, outParam) which doesn't seems to work but changing to object seems to have done the job, i was just trying to be over smart :) Jul 12, 2016 at 16:04

In the case where the stored proc does not have an output parameter I do the following, effectively making some Sql that returns a select statement;

You can add the stored procedure as an EF function then call it driectly from the context.

For anyone working with an EDMX file you can add a code generation item and then use the following t4 code to replace the .Context.tt. It will create all the code to map your stored procedures using the method:

It will use SqlQuery<> when there is a result set and ExecuteSqlCommand when there is not, but in both scenarios the out SqlParameter localSqlExecReturnValue will contain the int return code from the stored procedure call. This can be used with other generators it only generates additional code for stored procedure calls.
