I am using the following device to test my app:

I am posting a JSON string that is about 498467 bytes (0.48MB) in size.

When my app syncs this data, it fails when I toString() the JSONObect e.g:

What and how is the best way to fix this out of memory issue?

  • can you split the json? I mean, a 450kb string alone... think about the space the jsonobject will take... – WarrenFaith Mar 11 '13 at 19:43
  • @WarrenFaith This is always an option. I notice that the app is using around 11MB of heap when it starts to run GC. Is my app using too much in the first place? I don't know what an average app should use. – HGPB Mar 11 '13 at 19:54

While this is not a very "elegant" solution, you can try adding android:largeHeap="true" to your manifest. Try running with this, but I do not recommend leaving it there since it can cause a few performance issues.
That said, if it doesn't solve the out-of-memory problem, it might be somewhere in the JSON or the code itself.

You may try the streaming approach employed by Jackson: it seems to allow incremental writing without the memory overhead suffered by the stock Android JSON library that needs to serialize the whole JSON object in String form before writing it on the connection stream.


I check my AVD configuration. I have the same RAM amount. But, I have bigger heap size like 48 M. I think, it is worth to try.

    increasing heap size is not a real solution as this might just postpone the problem to the release... if the app can't handle so much data, the data should be reduces as best as possible... – WarrenFaith Mar 11 '13 at 19:44
  • The point is I need to get it to work on 16MB since this seems the default on smaller devices. The app seems to work ok so far on an HDPI device with 32 MB VM Heap. – HGPB Mar 11 '13 at 19:48
