I have 8 binary files that I cat into a tgz file. I produced this new tgz file couple of days back and md5sumed it and saved the value.

cat *.* > abc.tgz

**This directory only contained binary files before creating abc.tgz

I deleted this abc.tgz accidentally couple of days back but wasnt worried as I knew md5 value and I had other binary files intact.

When I now try to create abc.tgz files the md5sum is different. The individual binary files still have the same md5sum as in the past. However, the new tgz file being created does not match checksum. These zipped files contain rpms and while installing one of them...it seems to be missing some file(inevitably corrupted). This is what led me to compare checksums. How do I proceed from here?

Any explanation appreciated. Thanks!

OS: RedHat 5 (if it counts) Note I do not have old file so that I could diff :(

I don't really know what caused the md5sum to change, but I'm just puzzled about why would you use cat to generate a .tgz file instead of tar and gzip, or tar -z? Since gunzip won't recognize it, what do you use the output for? If you're doing backups like that, you might want to review your procedures.

    cat is to concatenate files....since I have several files...I understand I could use tar with -c option but in my opinion there are many ways to do one thing. That being said, cat is also perfectly valid. Btw your answer should have been a comment...since it does not answer my question :) – Vikram May 2 '13 at 19:19
  • @Vikram cat is not "perfectly valid" to create a tgz file, simply because it won't be a tgz. What makes you think otherwise and how do you "untar"/"uncat" the files that you so have created?! – Adrian Frühwirth May 3 '13 at 23:30

    @AdrianFrühwirth cat binaryfile* >> concatenatedbinaryfiles.tgz and to untar usual tar extract command: tar zxvf concatenatedbinaryfiles.tgz...I have been using these commands for a while on RHEL and it works as expected – Vikram May 7 '13 at 14:05
